THE GORGE MAHJ

your reluctant
MAHJONG MAGI
I teach, not to create income, but to create community. I write, not to create content, but to create connection. I want to draw together the collective communities of the Columbia River Gorge — one table at a time.
OUR STORY
GATHER, GAME, GROW
Inspired by the natural beauty, the laid-back spirit, and the stubborn sense of community in the Columbia River Gorge, The Gorge Mahj exists to bring people together through a game that has been doing exactly that for a hundred years.
American Mah Jongg is four people, one table, and two hours where nobody looks at a phone. That's the whole pitch. It travels well between generations, it forgives a slow learner, and it gives people a reason to see faces, old and new, wherever their table appears.
Whether you're here to learn, to compete, or just to enjoy good company — you belong here. We gather at the table. We play with purpose. We grow as a community.
WHAT WE'RE ABOUT
WELCOMING
Open to all. Together at the table, whoever you came with.
ROOTED
Inspired by the Gorge, built on a long tradition that isn't ours alone.
MINDFUL
Strategy, focus, and respect for the game and the people playing it.
AUTHENTIC
Real connections, made slowly. No growth-hacking a mahjong club.
TIMELESS
Classic today, enduring tomorrow — the game will outlast all of us.

HIDDEN IN PLAIN SIGHT
FIRST YOU SEE A SUNRISE. THEN YOU FEEL A SMILE.
Our mark is a joker — part sun coming up over the Gorge, part the watchful face seen on some American Mah Jongg joker tiles. Only the eyes and a hit of forehead show above the ridgeline.
It's subtle on purpose. Newcomers see a nice sunrise over the river; players catch the joker and smile at her warmth. Once you've seen it, you can't unsee it — which is roughly how this game gets you, too.
WHERE THIS GOES
What I'm Actually Trying to Build
A TABLE IN EVERY TOWN
From Troutdale to Maryhill, close enough that nobody drives more than 20 minutes to play.
MORE TEACHERS THAN ME
Every beginner series should produce somebody willing to teach the next one. Take a table.
ROOMS THAT STAY FULL
Local venues getting a reliable night out of a slow one. Offer a room.
NOBODY PLAYING ALONE
If you moved here and don't know anyone yet, this is the shortest path to four friends.
come find a table
That's the whole invitation. Learn with us, play with us, or tell us about the game you already run.
